About the Four-Way Test Speech Contest

From Rotary’s earliest days, members have been committed to promoting high ethical standards in their professional and personal lives.  That commitment is embodied in one of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics: The Four Way Test.

Created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, who later served as Rotary International President, the Four Way Test was developed when he was asked to lead a company facing bankruptcy. His simple 24-word guide became the standard for sales, production, advertising, and customer and partner relationships.  The company’s recovery was credited to its clear, principled philosophy.

Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the Four Way Test has since been translated into more than one hundred languages and shared around the world.  Today, Rotary District 7980’s Four Way Test Speech Contest invites students to apply these timeless principles to real world issues, demonstrating thoughtful leadership, integrity, and courage.
